Youth Weekend- Saturday night

It was a beautiful first night of youth weekend Saturday night. Sunset was at 7:26 so quitting time was 7:56.  We hunted out at my parent's. My brother (Josh) and I went out at about 6:20. Got up into the stand and didn't see our first deer until about 7:15 which was pretty typical for our property. First out was a basket 8 point buck. He was pretty decent size but the shot was over 120 yards and Josh wasn't comfortable shooting open sited. He got out there about 20 more yards and out walked a big guy behind him. I couldn't tell how big his rack was but he had a HUGE body and his tines were pretty tall as far as we could tell. Unfortunately, he too was too far out.

After about 20 minutes we saw a group of about 5 or 6 up on the ridge across from us. It looked to be all does but it was starting to get dark and we couldn't really tell. Josh spotted a few more across the hay field off to the left, but none came close enough.

It was a beautiful night though and we saw a lot of deer. We know their schedule and pattern now so hopefully it will lead to a great year!

Sunset over the treeline.

Full moon over the trees, reflecting on the pond.

Tri-County

Hey ya'll! Welp, one week from now is opening day of archery season and I cannot wait!! We headed out to Tri-County to scope out some of the deer activity. I haven't ever been there before and I really really loved it. Zane and I found a few places that we saw deer traffic so hopefully it'll be a great spot for us.

For those of you that don't know... Tri-State is a wildlife preserve in Syracuse, Indiana.

"Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area is dedicated to providing quality hunting and fishing opportunities while maintaining 3,546 acres of land, with 650 acres of lakes and impoundments. This area is composed of flat to rolling upland fields and gradual to steep slopes of oak-hickory woodlands, falling off to depressions of wetlands. Tri-County includes 10 natural lakes with water depths of 75 feet.
Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area was established in 1951. By 1953, formal management of the property was underway. In 1963, a dam was constructed at the outlet of six natural lakes, creating Flatbelly Marsh. This wetland is an important area for migratory waterfowl, furbearers, shorebirds and fish."
